To Design or not to Design? That is the question. In actuality, the question is: Should you spend a few extra dollars and hire an interior design expert for even the smallest of projects? I’m here to say, “YES”!
Every once in a while I run across a neighbor or friend who has done a great job with doing their own interior designs in their home. They come up with creations that are fantastic; everything just seems to fit and capture who they are. I don’t dispute that this happens, but my point is their design was successful because it’s THEY who were personally involved with that design. It stands to reason that if you want a successful design on your project then you need a design to reflect who you are. And the best way to achieve that design is to hire someone who takes the time to know and understand you, someone who can translate that understanding into a design that truly captures who you are, what you need and want, and do it within the price parameters that work for you.
As a contractor, I’m around design and color all the time. Yet I still bring in experts to ensure my projects are an absolute success. And they do it on budget! A good designer, who knows product can take a design you love from either www.Houzz.com or www.Pinterest.com and advise and make substitutions…
Prevailing wisdom is that interior designers drive up the cost of projects. That’s just not true. Design should be a line item in your budget from the start and should be the only thing that is not compromised when trying to cut costs. Hiring someone who does this type of work on a day-to-day basis, someone who is up on current trends and design, someone who understands which expenditures can build value into your project and, maybe more importantly, which ones to avoid unnecessary and expensive change orders. Finding the right designer can help to make your remodeling project an enjoyable experience.
